Denisse’s Journey in Agriculture
In Sonsonate, amidst the lush fields and agricultural training grounds, Denisse stands out not just for her determination but for her role as a trailblazer in a predominantly male field. As an Agricultural High School student and a beneficiary of the Colibrí Program scholarship, Denisse is breaking stereotypes and carving a path for herself in the world of agriculture.
Challenging Gender Norms
Denisse is the only girl in her class of 11 students at her agricultural institute. This hasn’t deterred her; instead, it has fueled her resolve to excel. “At first, my family didn’t want me to study agriculture because they believed it was a field for men,” Denisse recalls. “But I insisted, and when I received the scholarship, they were happy and proud.”
Now, with the unwavering support of her family, teachers, and classmates, Denisse is thriving. She believes firmly in the importance of equal opportunities for everyone, regardless of gender.
A Deep Connection with Nature
From a young age, Denisse has had a profound love for plants and animals. Her concern for the environment and the impact of soil degradation on food security and rural communities drives her ambition to learn and make a difference.
She is keenly aware of how environmental issues affect not only the land but also the livelihoods of rural families. “Nature is something very beautiful,” she says. “If at some point you are surrounded by it, the experience is wonderful. That’s why, just as nature helps us, we must also help it, by protecting and respecting it.”
From Barista to Future Engineer
Before securing her scholarship, Denisse participated in a Barista course at the School of Coffee Farm Administrators, RENACER, completing 50 hours of theoretical and practical training. She learned various methods of coffee preparation, adding a unique skill set to her agricultural education.
This scholarship not only provides financial assistance, covering her travel and activity expenses but also serves as a stepping stone toward her goal of becoming an agricultural engineer. Denisse is committed to studying diligently to maintain her scholarship and achieve high grades.
A Vision for the Future
Denisse’s vision is clear: she aspires to become an engineer who can develop and implement tools to protect and enhance the environment. Her journey is a testament to the power of perseverance and the importance of supporting young women in all fields, especially those traditionally dominated by men.
Through her story, Denisse hopes to inspire other young women to pursue their dreams, regardless of societal expectations. Her dedication to learning and her passion for nature highlight the profound impact that one determined individual can have on the environment and community.
